In six matchdays, the Nigeria Professional Football League will crown a champion. Forget the nail-biting title race in the English Premier League between Manchester City and Arsenal; this race is even tighter. Top of the table Enugu Rangers and 6th place Plateau United are separated by just seven points, with the margin for error thinner than a razor blade. Rangers have racked up an impressive 3 wins and 4 draws from 16 away games, and this has seen them shoot up the league table. Yup, I called 13 points out of a possible 48 "impressive." I'll explain that in a bit. So, what's been going on this season, and how did we end up here? Well, quite a lot. Let's try to recap, shall we? Now, if you've been sleeping on our domestic league, you might scratch your head wondering why racking up 13 points away from home is such a big deal. But for those who've been following the league, you're probably letting out your third "Wow!" and thinking about placing a bet on Enugu Rangers to lift what would be an 8th league title. Not to worry, you can do that on BetKing, and we have the best odds for that for our online betting community.

Why all the hype? Well, it's pretty rare around here. You see, Nigerian teams are notorious for being unbeatable on their home turf. Currently, 8 of 20 teams haven't lost at home, including 17th place Sunshine Stars who are in a relegation battle. Similarly, 7 teams have failed to win away from home after 32 matchdays. So, those away points? They're like gold dust. This isn’t strange, though. At the peak of their powers, Kano Pillars made their way into the Guinness World Record for going 202 league games unbeaten at home. This run lasted 12 years, 63 days between June 2003 and August 2015. During that time, they won four league titles, including a three-peat between 2011 and 2013. Sadly, Pillars are far from that dominant team and currently sit 9th on the table, 13 points from the top. They can, however, be excited for the future, thanks to the emergence of 17-year-old Yusuf Abdullahi. The pacey winger netted all 5 of Kano Pillars’ goals in their 5-2 win over Gombe United back in December and is definitely a player worth building around. While it might seem obvious based on their league positions, keep an eye on Remo Stars (2nd) and Enyimba (3rd) in the title race. Remo Stars boast one of Nigeria's best sporting structures and have put in the hard work to be genuine contenders. At the start of the season, Head Coach Daniel Ogunmodede embraced the "league title or bust'' tag given to his team by the media, and they've certainly delivered. Just one point behind Rangers, they're in perfect position to pounce on any slip-ups. Spearheaded by Sikiru Alimi, the league's top scorer with 14 goals, they stand a solid chance at clinching the title, and our bet of the day is for them to deliver a title to Ikene.

Reigning champions Enyimba has had a rollercoaster season. The most dramatic moment came during their home game against Doma United when they scored an obvious goal, only to have it disallowed moments later because of complaints from Doma United players. But the saga didn't stop there. Referee Nura Abdullahi left the pitch to review the goal in the broadcast booth and eventually awarded it. It's worth noting that the NPFL doesn't use VAR technology, so you can imagine the chaos that ensued. In the managerial department, they’ve also had some complexities. Head Coach Finidi George, who led them to the league title last season, was away with the Nigeria national football team at AFCON 2023. During his one-month absence, assistant Olarenwaju Yemi stepped up and handled the team, keeping them firmly in the title race. Now that Finidi George has been officially named the permanent Head Coach of the Super Eagles (and resigned from the reigning champions), Enyimba will once again look to Olarenwaju Yemi to guide them in their quest to become the first Nigerian team to win 10 league titles. Having served as an assistant all his life, Yemi knows that delivering a title to the city of Aba would land him the full-time job.

Away from the title race, Rivers United just fired Head Coach Stanley Eguma. Eguma, who steered them to the league title two seasons ago, was the longest-serving manager in the league, having led the team for 16 years. However, his departure seemed unfair. Rivers United faced a scheduling dilemma with continental commitments conflicting with NPFL matches, leaving them with six games outstanding. Naturally, this affected their league position, resulting in an 11th place standing. In fact, in an unprecedented move, the league is currently on a one-month hiatus to allow the completion of their postponed matches. Assistant Coach Evans Ogenyi has stepped in on an interim basis, though he hasn’t hit the ground running, no thanks to his 1 point from two games. The race for the Golden Boot is just as thrilling as the battle for the title. Bayelsa United's Robert Mizo was in top scoring form, netting 10 goals before departing for Libya's Al Hilal. With Mizo gone, Remo Stars' Sikiru Alimi (14 goals), Enyimba's Chijioke Mbaoma (13), Plateau United's Albert Hilary (12), and Kano Pillars' duo Ibrahim Mustapha (10) and Rabiu Ali (8) lead the charge, while Sporting Lagos' Jonathan Alukwu and Junior Lokosa have collectively scored 15 league goals, adding even more excitement to the mix. Sporting Lagos has also had a managerial shake-up this season. Last month, they parted ways with Paul Offor, the man responsible for their promotion, and brought in former Kwara United manager Abdullahi Biffo for the remainder of the campaign. Biffo has had mixed results so far, winning one and losing one of his two games in charge. Currently, they find themselves just two points above the relegation zone, and will be banking on Biffo's expertise to help them survive the drop.
