Athletic Club vs Girona

Athletic Club enters this match amidst one of their most challenging stretches in recent memory, having endured three consecutive defeats across all competitions. Their struggles include two disappointing losses in La Liga and a painful Champions League setback at home against Arsenal. 

Most concerning has been their sudden lack of offensive production. The Basque side has now gone three full matches without scoring a goal, culminating in a frustrating away defeat to Valencia. Their historic home fortress, once impenetrable, also showed cracks with a shocking 1-0 loss to regional rivals Alaves, marking their first home defeat to this opponent since 2005. 

If there is a silver lining to be found, it arrives in the form of their next opponent: a deeply struggling Girona side that has suffered four losses in its first five matches. The Catalans have looked utterly lost on the field, scoring only twice while conceding an alarming 15 goals. 

Their most recent performance, a 4-0 home defeat to newly promoted Levante, was compounded by ill-discipline, with both Vitor Reis and Axel Witsel receiving red cards that will see them suspended for this match. Athletic will also be without the suspended Dani Vivian, who himself picked up a red card at Valencia, but the absence of Girona’s key defensive figures may prove far more impactful.

Despite their own poor run of form, Athletic Club remains a strong favourite to not only win, but do so convincingly. Girona’s matches have consistently featured high-scoring results, with every game this season seeing Over 1.5 goals and three of the five exceeding three goals. This presents an ideal opportunity for Athletic to rediscover their attacking rhythm and secure a much-needed victory with room to spare.

Real Oviedo vs Barcelona

Returning to La Liga for the first time since 2001, Real Oviedo find themselves in a predictably tough position early in the season. Yet, their place in the relegation zone doesn’t fully reflect their performances. Of their five opening matches, two came against giants Real Madrid and Villarreal; accounting for five of the eight goals they have conceded. 

Despite those losses, Oviedo competed with spirit and organisation. Their most disappointing result was a narrow 1–0 defeat to fellow promoted side Elche at the weekend, a match they believed was winnable. Now, with four losses in five games, they face another tough test: a visit from defending champions Barcelona.

Barcelona, after a somewhat sluggish start, have rediscovered their dominant form. New goalkeeper Joan García played a key role in securing two early wins and a draw, but the team has since hit its stride emphatically. A 6–0 demolition of Valencia was followed by a statement 2–1 Champions League victory at Newcastle and a controlled 3-0 win against Getafe. 

With confidence soaring, Lamine Yamal back influencing play and Rashford starting to find his confidence, the Blaugrana look every bit the side that cruised to the title last season.

For Oviedo, containing this Barcelona attack seems a monumental task. The Asturian club’s resilience will be tested against a team that creates chances relentlessly. While Oviedo’s fight has been admirable, Barcelona’s firepower and momentum make them overwhelming favourites. Expect the visitors to control the match and score multiple goals, extending Oviedo’s difficult return to the top flight.

Levante vs Real Madrid

After a challenging return to La Liga, Levante finally found their breakthrough in spectacular fashion, securing an emphatic 4–0 victory away at Girona at the weekend. That performance, fueled by the electrifying contribution of young loanee Etta Eyong, showcased exactly the kind of intensity and attacking verve that had been missing from their early displays. 

Although Girona’s collapse to nine men certainly played a role, the confidence and cohesion Levante displayed cannot be overlooked. Now, as they prepare to host a flawless Real Madrid side that has yet to drop a point this season, they will draw inspiration from their near-upset of Barcelona just weeks ago. On that occasion, Levante raced into a 2–0 lead at home before eventually succumbing to a 3–2 defeat after a late Barça winner. 

That performance proved they can compete with, and even dominate, the very best, at least for stretches. The question now is whether they can sustain that level over ninety minutes against a Madrid team that continues to find ways to win.

Real Madrid, for their part, have opened the campaign with six consecutive victories across all competitions (five in the league) though they have rarely looked invincible. They have finished two matches with ten men and often relied on individual moments of brilliance rather than controlled dominance. 

Central to their perfect start has been the scintillating form of Kylian Mbappé, who has seamlessly carried his rich vein of form into the new season. The Merengues also welcome back Jude Bellingham, who made a late cameo against Espanyol following two months out with a shoulder issue. Eduardo Camavinga, another key midfielder, has also returned from a shorter layoff. 

While neither is expected to start against Levante, their presence significantly bolsters Xabi Alonso’s options off the bench, offering greater tactical flexibility as matches wear on.

This encounter promises to be another tense, finely balanced affair, a hallmark of Madrid’s season so far. Levante will look to sit deep and exploit any uncertainty in their still-gelling structure. For Real, the game will likely turn on the quality of their attacking stars and their ability to convert half-chances into goals. 

Levante must manage those critical moments better than they did against Barcelona if they are to take anything from this match. While Madrid remain clear favourites, Levante’s fight and recent resurgence suggest this will be far from straightforward.

Liverpool vs Southampton

Their latest win, a hard-fought Merseyside derby triumph, saw an early two-goal lead nearly slip after Everton clawed one back, requiring resilience to secure the points. 

Now, the Reds turn their attention to the cup, where they face a welcome reprieve against lower-tier opposition; an ideal chance to rotate the squad while maintaining momentum. This match offers a golden opportunity for new signings to shine. 

Alexander Isak is expected to receive substantial minutes as he builds match sharpness, while creative force Florian Witz could unlock a defence significantly below Premier League standard and kill the noise that has started to get louder over his performances and price tag. Young talent Rio Ngumoha may also be handed a start at Anfield, providing a glimpse of the future as head coach Arne Slot manages his resources through a congested fixture list.

Southampton arrive with mixed form but cup confidence. The Championship side have struggled domestically with just one win in six, yet they’ve been impressive in this competition, recording clean sheets in wins over Norwich and Northampton. Under pressure manager Will Still, who took charge following the club’s relegation, needs results quickly, but a trip to Anfield is arguably the toughest challenge imaginable.

Despite likely changes, Liverpool’s strength in depth should comfortably see them through. Their rotated side still boasts international quality and attacking threat, making them strong favourites to advance and extend their perfect start to the season.

Lincoln vs Chelsea

Chelsea enter this cup tie amid a concerning dip in form, winless in their last three matches following defeats to Bayern Munich and Manchester United. These results have sparked renewed scrutiny of manager Enzo Maresca, whose tactical choices at Old Trafford drew particular criticism. With just two wins from 6 games in all competitions this season, confidence within the squad has clearly wavered. 

This match against third-tier Lincoln City offers a timely opportunity to reset, rebuild momentum, and restore belief with a convincing performance. For Lincoln, this fixture represents uncharted territory. Though they have navigated past lower-league opponents in earlier rounds, facing a Premier League giant like Chelsea is an entirely different challenge. 

While a victory seems improbable, the occasion offers a financial windfall and a chance to test themselves against elite opposition. The Imps arrive with a ten-game unbeaten streak and will look to disrupt Chelsea with relentless energy and physicality. If the Blues show any lingering fragility, Lincoln could make this a far more uncomfortable evening than anticipated.

Nevertheless, Chelsea’s superior quality should ultimately prevail. This match is a chance to quiet the doubts and play with the freedom that has recently eluded them.
 

Port Vale vs Arsenal

Despite struggling near the relegation zone in League One, Port Vale have found renewed belief with back-to-back league victories, offering hope their season may finally be turning around. Their cup form has been a highlight, with two gritty 1–0 away wins—first against Blackpool, then a notable triumph over Championship side Birmingham. 

While defeating Arsenal represents a far greater challenge, The Valiants will embrace the occasion in front of a passionate home crowd, aiming to replicate the defensive discipline that brought them this far.

Arsenal arrive with points to prove, both to their supporters and themselves. Their late equaliser against Manchester City did little to ease frustrations over Mikel Arteta’s perceived caution in a match many felt was there for the taking. This cup tie offers a chance to shift tone: an opportunity to play with attacking freedom, test tactical variations, and integrate squad players hungry for minutes. 

Teenage talents Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri are expected to start, injecting creativity and energy as Arteta rotates his side. While Vale’s spirit and structure may trouble Arsenal early, the Gunners’ technical superiority should ultimately prevail. Milan vs Lecce

Lecce’s manager Eusebio Di Francesco will likely rest key players ahead of a crucial league fixture against Bologna, handing opportunities to squad players eager to prove their worth. While this could make Lecce appear vulnerable, it also means their backups will be highly motivated to impress, potentially making the match more challenging than expected for Milan.

Still, with momentum firmly on their side and home advantage in their favor, Milan are clear favorites to extend their winning run and advance in the cup. Allegri will demand focus and professionalism from his side to ensure there are no surprises.

Udinese vs Palermo
